One Week Down

Today ends the first week of my travel... only four more to go.

The meeting continued with lectures by Rudolph Marcus, Kurt Wuthrich, Sir Harold Kroto, Robert Huber, Walter Kohn and Peter Agre. Marcus’s talk was quite interesting showing how theory could nicely explain some wet-chemistry observations. Kroto’s talk was interesting, and one of the most dynamic of the meeting, although it had little to do with chemistry. He mentioned some interesting personal history, in that he acted in a production of Henry V along side Ian McKellan, but quickly moved to push several agendas that created quite a stir among the audience. His small group discussion with students was similarly controversial.

Walter Kohn showed a short movie that he produced on solar energy and Agre showed a slide show of his canoeing trips in Alaska and Canada.

I had lunch with the Chinese delegation. I got a chuckle when they asked what we normally eat, because they envisioned us eating hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries for every meal.
